George Lopez Developing Latina Musical Drama for CW
The CW is teaming with George Lopez to develop Star Crazy, a Latina-focused musical drama. The hourlong drama centers on a young Latina singer as she rises from poverty to fame and captures the heart of the nation along the way. The Wonder Years alum Bob Brush and actress Mel Harris will pen the script and executive produce the Warner Bros. Television drama. Lopez and his Travieso Productions president Leslie Kolins Small also will executive produce.

Jack Black, Tim Robbins to Star in HBO Comedy ‘The Brink’
Jack Black
and Tim Robbins are headed to The Brink. The half-hour dark comedy from executive producers Jerry Weintraub, Jay Roach and Roberto Benabib was ordered to pilot at HBO in September. The entry focuses on a geopolitical crisis and its effect on three disparate and desperate men. Robbins is set to play Walter Hollander, U.S. secretary of state who is billed as a man of big appetites and little patience for the war mongers in the Situation Room, while Black will take on the part of Alex Coppins, a lowly foreign service officer reluctantly caught on the ground in the middle of it all.

Seven weeks into the 2013-14 season, the dust has started to settle, the strongest new shows have been renewed, the biggest duds have been cancelled, and the borderline performers have been getting a mix of both. Some anticipated time slot wars materialized, like the Tuesday 8 PM hour where incumbent NCIS and newcomers Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Originals all have been competitive, and some didn’t, like the hyped Blacklist-Hostages showdown, which turned to be a lopsided match. Which leads us to one of the lessons of this fall, that pre-launch tracking is not that reliable.

Four Republican senators share a house in Washington D.C. and fight for their political lives as the Tea Party surge puts them in jeopardy. While not as funny as HBO’s Veep, the premise is solid (house sharing is common) and brings a sense of freshness to the scripted world, though overwhelmed viewiers may find that their DVRs can’t keep up with all the worthy watching out there.

(ratings) ‘Criminal Minds’ most-watched episode of the season: Shirtless Morgan every week?
Criminal Minds had 11.6 million viewers and had a a 2.7 adults 18-49 rating, jumping 17 percent from last week. The ratings gain was despite airing against all-original competition and lead-in Survivor dipping a notch. At 10 p.m., CBS’ CSI was up 6 percent. Maybe Minds should do Shirtless Morgan every week?

HBO Europe readies first original local drama series
HBO Europe is producing its first-ever locally-originated drama series,Wataha (The Pack).Wataha will be action-driven and with HBO Europe’s order for six one hours, marks the channel operator’s first full-fledged series based on a locally-originated idea. Set in Bieszczady, a remote mountainous area that borders Poland and Ukraine, the series follows a events after a group of border guards is mysteriously attacked. The series is being produced by ATM Grupa.

Fox Star Studios Searches Out ‘Finding Fanny’
(feature) Fox Star Studios has boarded as co-producer on “Finding Fanny” an ensemble comedy from the successful Illuminati Films production label. The bilingual story is about a man’s (Kapoor) search for his childhood love and how a dysfunctional group of characters go on a road trip with him to find her. The film is currently in the last days of principal photography.


Ex-Fox Exec Mickey Carter Tapped As SVP CBS TV Networks Distribution
In his new role Mickey Carter will work with CBS’ team of negotiators and assist in multiplatform and distribution strategies for all CBS-owned properties. He will work together with Jonathan Sarrow, another former Fox exec, who was recently appointed to a similar role within the Television Distribution division. Both will report to Ray Hopkins, President of the department.
