Upon first seeing this trailer at Upfronts, I tweeted that Pure Genius seemed poised to supplant Limitless as CBS’ “craaazy science show,” merging as it does a rote TV set-up with improbably advanced technology. But once you buy into the translucent iPads, domestic abuse-predicting algorithms and such, series creator Jason Katims has crafted a uniquely engaging hospital drama.

Endless Bummer: TV’s Scripted Series Wither in the Heat
Broadcast TV’s flirtation with sultry-weather scripted fare appears to have been just another summer fling, as the networks largely have scaled back previous efforts to air dramas and comedies during the tropical months. Discounting a few odd burn-offs and season-straddling shows like the CW’s canceled pandemic drama "Containment" and Fox’s "Houdini & Doyle," the Big Five nets have just nine scripted series lined up for the dog days, marking a significant downturn compared to the 17 dramas and comedies that aired in the year-ago period.

(q&a) ABC’s Robert Mills on Their Retro Summer TV Lineup and Why the Bachelor Franchise Remains So Strong
How did you woo Alec Baldwin to take over as host of Match Game?

Mills: I based this on him playing Charles Nelson Reilly in the SNL Inside the Actor’s Studio sketch. He played him so well, I thought that even if he had never watched Match Game before that, I’m sure he watched episodes to prepare for that sketch, so he at least had a familiarity with the show. And they did. The next day they came back and said, yeah, he’s actually interested in this. The next week I was sitting with him in New York having a drink, and it’s been a lovefest since then.
