Period Drama From ‘Walk the Line’ Director Gets USA Pilot Order
USA Network has greenlit the period drama pilot Damnation. Described as an epic saga of the secret history of the 1930s American heartland, the project centers on the mythic conflict and bloody struggle between big money and the downtrodden, God and greed, charlatans and prophets. The pilot follows Seth Davenport, a man masquerading as a small town Iowa preacher in the hopes of starting a full-blown insurrection against the status quo. Tony Tost (Longmire) wrote the pilot and will exec produce with James Mangold, and Guymon Casady and Daniel Rappaport on behalf of Entertainment 360. Damnation will be produced by Universal Cable Productions.

‘Baby Daddy’ Renewed for Season 6 at Freeform
The pickup will take the multicam comedy to 100 episodes.

Writer LaToya Morgan Inks Overall Deal With AMC, Joins ‘Into The Badlands’
Coming off her stint as a writer on AMC’s Revolutionary War drama Turn: Washington’s Spies, LaToya Morganhas signed a two-year overall deal with the network to work on existing series and develop new ones. Under the pact, Morgan will join the staff of AMC’s martial arts drama Into The Badlands.


Freida Pinto To Star In John Ridley’s Miniseries ‘Guerrilla’ For Showtime & Sky
Slumdog Millionaire’s Freida Pintois set as the female lead in John Ridley’s six-part limited series Guerrilla, for Showtime and Sky Atlantic, which has Idris Elba co-starring and executive producing. Ridley will write the majority of the episodes and will direct the first two episodes and the finale of the project, a love story set against the backdrop of one of the most politically explosive times in U.K. history.

Matthew Goode to Star in WGN America’s Sci-Fi Pilot ‘Roadside Picnic’
WGN America’s sci-fi drama Roadside Picnic has found its star. Matthew Goode is set to topline the pilot. Based on the 1972 novel of the same name by Arkady and Boris Strugatskys, Roadside Picnic explores a near-future world where aliens have come and gone, leaving humankind to explore the wondrous and dangerous mysteries left behind.

‘Midnight, Texas’: Jason Lewis Promoted To Regular On New NBC Drama Series
Sex and the City alum Jason Lewishas joined the cast of NBC’s midseason supernatural drama series Midnight, Texasas a series regular. He will reprise his role from the pilot, which originally had been written as a regular but eventually was cast as a guest starring/recurring.

Bethany Joy Lenz Joins American Gothic
Bethany Joy Lenz will recur on CBS’ summertime whodunnit drama as April, a vibrant, insightful nurse at a rehab facility who develops a meaningful bond with one of the Hawthornes.

Constance Wu and Megan Mullally Join Hulu’s ‘Dimension 404’
The actresses are the latest to board the six-episode drama from YouTuber Freddie Wong.

The Royals: British Actor Jules Knight Joins Season 3 in Powerful Role

Variety: Americans Are Watching Less Traditional TV as Smartphone Media Usage Booms
the first quarter of 2016, daily time spent using smartphones to consume media among U.S. adults (18+) shot up 60% — from 62 minutes a year earlier to 99 minutes per day. At the same time live TV dropped 1%, declining about 3 minutes on average, from 4 hours 34 minutes in Q1 2015 to 4 hours 31 minutes, and compared with 4 hours 51 minutes in the first quarter of 2014, per Nielsen’s quarterly Total Audience Report.

Deadline: CBS Wraps Upfront Ad Sales With Total Up 5%
CBSappears to be the first major broadcaster that’s nearly ready to close the books on its upfront ad sales, and the numbers continue to indicate that this is a strong year. With just a few deals left to complete, total sales are likely to wind up at close to $2.5 billion, about 5% higher than last year, we’re told. This reverses three consecutive years of declines in total sales in the upfront market.

Deadline: The CW Wraps Upfront Sales With Double-Digit Volume Increase
The CW posted bigger percentage increases than CBS, with both the total haul and CPMs said to be up low double digits from last year. With volume increase believed to be in the 12%-14% range, the CW pre-sold about 80% of its ad inventory, on par with last year, for as much as $500 million, sources said.

Warner Bros. Television is bringing a record number of its series –21– down to the San Diego fanboy convention. This comes on the heels of 20th Century Fox TV announcing last week that they’re also showing off a massive 13 shows at Comic-Con.
