Salim and Mara Brock Akil are making their first move at their new studio home, Warner Bros. Television. The husband-and-wife pair have scored a pilot production commitment from ABC for the half-hour multicamera comedy Documenting Love. Documenting Love, which is described as a comedic love story about a modern-day power couple, will be penned by the writer-producer couple.

(from Fri) Marcia Clark Legal Drama Scores NBC Put Pilot Commitment

NBC has handed out a put pilot commitment to a legal drama based on Marcia Clark’s novel Blood Defense. She will co-write the series alongside writer-producers Elizabeth Craft and Sara Fain for ABC Studios and Mandeville TV. The project centers on Samantha Brinkman, a relentless criminal defense attorney in Los Angeles whose world is turned upside down when she is hired to defend a police detective in a high-profile homicide. It thrusts her into the public spotlight, exposing dark secrets from her past.

(from Fri) NBC Buys Modern-Day Noah’s Ark Drama Produced By Robert Zemeckis
NBChas bought The Ark, a high-concept drama spec from 20th Century Fox TV and Robert Zemeckis’ ImageMovers. The project, a grounded, modern retelling of the Noah’s Ark story from the Bible, was written by Black List scribe Daniel Kunka(12 Rounds). It centers on an engineer who, after the death of his wife, has a vision to construct a ship capable of sustaining life in space. When the build happens to coincide with the coming end of the world, the engineer realizes there may be a larger story at play.

Seasoned writer-producer Diane Ademu-Johnhas signed an overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV. Under the multi-year pact, Ademu-John recently joined the studio’s hit Fox dramaEmpireat the start of production of the upcoming third season as co-executive producer. Additionally, she will develop her own projects.

Thanks to the Rio Olympics, NBC now has a new world record of its own. The broadcaster has won 21 straight primetimes — including four following the closing ceremony. While the catalyst for the three-week run has clearly been the Summer Games, this week, four of five returning NBC shows have come back with higher ratings from their comparable pre-Olympic telecasts, despite the long break.

Amazon Unveils K-Pop Drama ‘The Idolm@ster’ as First South Korean Original
Amazon has unveiled its debut series in the Asian country. Set to debut in 2017, the live-action series fuses two of South Korea’s hottest exports, K-pop and TV dramas. It merges fiction with reality as it features a group of aspiring female K-pop singers as themselves in a scripted drama about the struggles of launching a music career.


Variety: Nielsen: Number of U.S. TV Households Grows in 2016-17 Season
The number of U.S. television households has increased for the fourth consecutive year. According to an estimate by Nielsen, the 2016-17 season will have 118.4 million U.S. television homes. That number represents a 1.7% increase from the previous year.

Variety: Serbia’s 20% Cash Rebate Draws Producers
Filmmakers coming to Serbia can take advantage of the Balkan country’s 20% cash rebate – a big help to their bottom line. The minimum spend for feature films and TV projects is 300,000 euros, or approximately $341,000. For documentaries, the minimum spend is 50,000 euros, or about $57,000. Serbia has no project cap. The application deadline for the present round of rebates is Sept. 30, 2016.

io9: Producer Says NBC Wanted The Walking Dead as a Zombie Crime Drama
Speaking at the Edinburgh International TV Festival, executive producer Gale Anne Hurd shared that show creator Frank Darabont pitched the original script to NBC executives. According to Hurd, one of NBC’s first questions was a little strange: “Do there have to be zombies?” The network then followed up by asking if the show could instead be a procedural crime drama where the two protagonists “solve a zombie crime of the week.”
