ABC Buys Post-Riot Cop Drama ‘Protect & Serve’ From Barbie Kligman & Billy Malone
ABC has put in developmentProtect & Serve, a drama from the Secrets & Lies duo of executive producer/showrunner Barbie Kligman and executive producer Aaron Kaplan. Written by Kligman and her husband, actor Billy Malone, Protect & Serve, from ABC Studios and Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, is set in the aftermath of a riot in an American city triggered by the shooting of an unarmed man by cops. The police department is dismantled and a newly appointed police chief is tasked with rebuilding from scratch.

NBC Nabs Mindy Kaling/Charlie Grandy Comedy With Put Pilot Commitment
The Mindy Project creator, executive producer and star Mindy Kaling has teamed with the series’ executive producer Charlie Grandy for a single-camera sibling comedy, which has been snatched by NBC with a put pilot commitment. Written by Kaling and Grandy, the untitled comedy centers on a charismatic gym owner with no ambition who lives with his younger brother, a gorgeous idiot. Their simple life of women and working out is put on hold when they have to take in the older brother’s son — whom they have never met.

Diane Guerrero To Star In CBS Immigration Drama From ‘Jane the Virgin’ Producers
Jane the Virgin recurring guest star Diane Guerrero has partnered with Jennie Snyder Urman, Ben Silverman and Paul Sciarrotta — for In the Country We Love, a drama project that has been set up at CBS. Guerrero is attached to star in the drama, based on her memoir. CBS TV Studios is the studio. Written by Sciarrotta, In the Country We Love centers on a successful corporate attorney who starts taking pro bono cases for undocumented immigrants after her past as the child of deported parents is revealed by a family emergency.

‘In Treatment’ Creator Returns to HBO With Drama Based on Israeli Kidnappings
HBO is teaming with the creator of In Treatment for a drama based on the famed Israeli kidnappings that captivated the world in 2014. The untitled series, which has earned a 10-episode commitment, hails from Hagai Levi and Noah Stollman, with Joseph Cedar on board to direct. The drama will be filmed in Israel with production starting next summer.

‘The Kennedys’ Producer Adapting Ken Pisani Novel ‘Amp’d’ for TV
The Kennedys producer Muse Entertainment has nabbed the adaptation rights to Emmy-nominated screenwriter Ken Pisani’s debut novel Amp’d, with an eye to turning it into a premium cable comedy. Amp’d follows Aaron, whose life is derailed after a car accident leads to the amputation of his left arm after he already faced a failed marriage and an unrewarding teaching job.

‘Unorganized Crime’ Mafia Comedic Drama Series Starring Chazz Palminteri Shopped
Chazz Palminteri and Kenny D’Aquila are shopping Unorganized Crime, a 30-minute presentation for a mafia-themed comedic drama series based on D’Aquila’s play. The play, a quirky mob-family comedy-drama, was staged in 2014 starring D’Aquila as Gino Sicuso, a forgotten brother and son who is banished to Detroit by his father. It is a savage and humorous tale of two brothers, Gino and Sal (Palminteri), and the love of a woman who is torn between loyalty and survival.

Bela Bajaria Joins Netflix: Former Universal TV President Named VP Content
In a potentially game-changing hire, Bela Bajaria, who sold three series to Netflix as head of Universal TV, is joining the Internet TV network as VP, Content. This marks the highest-level executive from the traditional Hollywood TV industry to go to Netflix. Bajaria, who will start on Nov.1, will replace Sean Carey, Netflix’s VP Content Acquisitions, who is leaving the company. She will oversee the licensing of TV and film content from major U.S. studios. She will also oversee a new team developing original unscripted programs — an area Netflix had been looking to expand into.

EPIX has never produced original programming before this week, so it was difficult to know what to expect from “Graves,” its first foray into comedy — a political satire about an ex-president and his dysfunctional family. So it’s remarkable just how much of a finished product “Graves” is, from casting to editing. The political comedy, starring Nick Nolte and Sela Ward, is both genuinely funny and genuinely moving, displaying a kind of rigor in its storytelling that is frequently lost on networks new to original programming.

BBC Orders Comedy ‘Motherland’ Co-Written by Sharon Horgan
The BBC has ordered a full season of comedy Motherland, written by Sharon Horgan. The six-part half-hour series order for BBC Two comes after strong ratings for a half-hour pilot that starred Anna Maxwell Martin, Diane Morgan and Lucy Punch. Critics lauded the, at times painful-to-watch, realistic portrayal of the trials of motherhood.

Channel 4 brings Black-ish to UK
The UK’s Channel 4 has acquired the local rights to ABC comedy Black-ish for its youth-skewing digital net E4. Produced by ABC Studios, Black-ish has been acquired from distributor Disney UK & Ireland.

‘The Mentalist’ to Get Russian Remake
The series will premiere on Russia’s Channel One and TV-3 in 2017.


Disney isn’t going to bid for Twitter, either
Cross another potential Twitter buyer off the list: Disney isn’t pursuing a bid for the social platform, either. Sources familiar with Disney, which was mulling a possible Twitter purchase last week, say the media giant has decided not to move forward. Earlier today Recode reported that Google, a logical buyer for Twitter who had also was hired a banker to kick the company’s tires, was not going to bid; Apple is also unlikely.
