‘Like Crazy’ Director Sets Amazon TV Series ‘White Fur’Drake Doremus is teaming with Amazon for romantic drama series White Fur. The hourlong show is based on a book of the same name by author Jardine Libaire, who will pen the script. Doremus will helm the series. White Fur is described as a tender, transgressive and epic love story that follows a young couple who battle the class divide and social conformity in 1980s New York. The project hails from FilmNation Entertainment.

Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil Team With OWN for Drama SeriesMara Brock Akil and Salim Akil are joining forces with Oprah Winfrey. The husband-and-wife team are partnering with Winfrey’s OWN network for a new drama series. Titled Love Is ___, the hourlong light drama will draw inspiration from their real-life relationship to tell the love story of a modern-day power couple.

‘Stupid Idiots’ Web Series Getting TV Adaptation By Paramount TV & Anonymous Content

…In a competitive situation, Paramount Television and Anonymous Content have acquired rights to Stupid Idiots, a comedy web series written, directed by and starring Stephanie Koenig, to develop as a TV series. Koenig is set to write the adaptation and star in the potential TV series, described as a (trying-to-get-out-of-the-) workplace comedy about two underachievers who consistently fail upwards.

Universal Cable Developing Series With Catherine Hardwicke, Dan HarmonUniversal Cable Productions (UCP) has unveiled its annual development slate, with this year’s projects including potential series from “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke and “Rick & Morty” co-creator Dan Harmon. Hardwicke will executive produce an adaptation of the best-selling book series “The Raven Cycle” by author Maggie Stiefvater for Syfy. UCP is also working on an adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s “Sirens of Titan” with Harmon and Evan Katz.

Carla Gugino Joins Netflix Horror Drama The Haunting of Hill House

Carla Gugino will star in Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House. In the 1959 Shirley Jackson novel on which the series is based, a supernatural scholar rents the titular, allegedly haunted mansion and invites people who’ve had run-ins with the paranormal to spend some time there. Weird stuff ensues.


‘Hamilton’s Daveed Diggs & Rafael Casal To Star in ‘Blindspotting’ From Snoot Entertainment

Daveed Diggs, who starred in the original Hamilton Broadway musical, and Rafael Casal are set to topline Snoot Entertainment’s upcoming film Blindspotting, from music video director Carlos Lopez Estrada in his feature directorial debut. The film, written by Diggs and Casal, loosely based on their experiences growing up in the Bay Area, is about two movers set against the colorful backdrop of a rapidly gentrifying Oakland.

NMV takes French-Canadian format south

…London-based producer and distributor New Media Vision (NMV) has picked up the US rights to a French-Canadian scripted format from Encore Television. Les Beaux Malaises (The Beautiful Discomforts) chronicles the personal life of celebrity stand-up comedian Martin who has to be funny for his day job but cuts an awkward and unsure figure as a husband and father. NMV will now adapt the series for the US market.

…Six months prior to the first day of the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, Sundance Institute has unveiled a TV-centric Indie Episodic section. The Indie Episodic section will include stories told in multiple installments with an emphasis on independent perspectives. The festival’s Special Events section has included such programming recently such as “O.J.: Made in America,” “Transparent,” “Top of the Lake,” and “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.”

(analyst) LAT: Television networks sell a record $19.7 billion in advertising at surprisingly strong upfront market

…Television networks are benefiting from surprisingly strong demand for their commercial time. Despite falling viewer ratings and fears over cord-cutting, major advertisers in the just-concluded upfront ad sales market placed orders for $19.7 billion worth of commercial spots on cable and broadcast TV networks, an increase of 5.9% over last year, according to the New Jersey research firm Media Dynamics Inc.
