(review) Variety: ‘Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders’
…This is a show addicted to its own thrills without asking why. Where “People v. O.J.” was an analysis of race and gender masquerading as a trashy, stilted soap opera, this series is simply a soap opera — baited with the barbed hook of reasonable doubt. It’s titillation with a veneer of utility. I confess it is hard to look away. (link)

(review) TVLine: Will & Grace Review: NBC’s Revival Is as Funny as You Hoped, Maybe Funnier
…As you’d expect, the political commentary is on point, savage and funny as hell. Whether a joke is aimed at President Trump or a generation of gays who don’t know Stonewall from Stonehenge, W&G hits the target with impressive consistency. And, at the end of the day, it reminds us that, beneath the barbs and bon mots, the show has a heart that’s as strong as it is soft. (link)

(ratings) What’s a hit on network TV? ‘Big Bang,’ ‘Empire,’ ‘This Is Us’ … and not much else
…In the 2016–17 season, an average episode of a non-sports show on ABC, CBS, FOX or NBC drew a 1.2 same-day rating among adults 18–49. (Throw in live sports and it ticks up slightly to 1.3.) That’s down a little from the Big 4 non-sports average of 1.3 in 2015–16. But despite that lower threshold, fewer series — 10 last season vs. 12 the year before — qualified as hits under our somewhat arbitrary but right-feeling benchmark of 50 percent above average. That means a 1.8 rating or higher. (tvbtn)

…There’s more evidence of a growing subscriber exodus threatening to hit the traditional pay-TV ecosystem. (opinion) Financial Times: Disney should sell ABC and go full stream ahead
…In the five years since subscription streaming took off, the services with the widest array of programming have endured. …Broad therefore looks best and there is one way Disney could make its subscription offering one of the broadest around. EDITORIAL NOTE: The Morning Update was created almost 5 years ago as a way to disseminate industry news to our small ABC Studios creative team without cluttering their inboxes. Since then, the update has taken on a life of its own, with subscribers from all over: executives within and outside the Walt Disney Company, producers and writers all over town, as well as college students all over the country looking to learn about the industry they hope to break into one day.

Originally conceived as a twice-daily update, I made the decision to move to a single morning update a few years ago as my work responsibilities grew. And today, because of evolving work responsibilities, I’m excited to announce that the amazingly talented and insightful Rachel Davis will be taking over editorial oversight of the Morning Update. I hope you will welcome and support her as you have done for me.

As always, please let us know if there are any topics you’d like additional coverage on, or if you know anyone else who would like to be added to this distro. Also, in addition to being shared via email, the Morning Update can be found online with a searchable archive at https://themorningupdate.wordpress.com.

Thank you for participating in what has become an amazing conversation about the industry that we love.
